Opera Audition Guidelines
The USC Thornton Opera Program includes
preparation for both the fall and spring productions
as well as the winter (early spring semester) opera
scenes program.
The opera program will hold auditions at the beginning of the fall semester each year. Only students currently admitted to a USC
degree program are eligible to audition for the
opera program. Graduate students and undergraduates from their second year on are invited to sign up for an audition time. Newly admitted undergraduate students may schedule an audition ONLY with the permission of their Voice Teacher. For more information, please contact our Opera Manager, Damien Elwood, opera@thornton.usc.edu, after August 8, 2011.
Students accepted into the
program as either principal cast or chorus are
required to enroll in either the Opera Workshop or Opera Chorus* classes.
Those auditioning should have two to three "art songs" or opera arias prepared. An
accompanist will be provided but the singer can
bring their own accompanist if so desired. The
singer must provide music for the accompanist.
Auditions are conducted in USC Thornton School
of Music facilities on the University Park Campus.
Audio or video recordings will not be accepted.
Audition time slots are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis by signing up on sheets posted on the Opera Call Board in the Ramo Hall lobby. The sign-up sheets are posted
one week before the start of fall classes.
*Check with your USC Thornton student advisor regarding which opera class to enroll in. Since auditions for the 2011-2012 opera program are held the first week of classes, prospective participants should enroll in the Opera Workshop class prior to the auditions to avoid late registration fees. Permission slips can be obtained from the Opera Office in MUS 107.
