University Professor Jean C. Shih is internationally known for her groundbreaking studies of the brain enzyme monoamine oxidase, which is also known as MAO. Sevanian Investigates the Effects of Oxidative Stress on Atherosclerosis
For much of his career, Sevanian has worked to identify specific mechanisms that are responsible for atherosclerosis, to enable drug discovery experts to create therapeutic interventions. A sizable portion of his research has focused on the role that oxidative stress plays in the progression of cardiovascular disease.

At the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Annual Meeting in Seattle in late March 2004, the APhA-ASP student chapter won five awards that garnered national attention.
National Chapter Achievement Award in Pharmaceutical Care Region 8 Winner for Operation Immunization International Pharmacy Student Federation (IPSF) Chapter of the Year Honorable Mention for Operation Diabetes HRSA 340B grant of $2k: APhA-ASP student chapter will receive a program award of $2,000 from the HRSA Pharmacy Services Support Center (PSSC) to support their work with two safety-net clinics in Los Angeles. The students will be assisting staff pharmacists in providing patients with medication consultation and disease state management.
