Doctor of Pharmacy/Graduate in Gerontology (Pharm.D./Gerontology Certificate)

The Pharm.D./Graduate Certificate in Gerontology is a unique program for students interested in pursuing geriatric pharmacy practice. Developed in 1990 by the School of Pharmacy and the USC Andrus Gerontology Center, this integrated program prepares students to assume leadership roles in academic, administrative or policy levels in the profession. With increased opportunities for pharmacists within the geriatric community, the program allows more mobility for clinical pharmacists in this area.

Admission Requirements and Application Process
The program requires the completion of 16 units of core courses in physiology, psychology, sociology and social policy aspects of aging offered by the School of Gerontology located on the University Park Campus. In addition, students are required to complete 8 units of approved elective courses in gerontology or geriatric pharmacy to be credited toward the Certificate. This program can successfully be completed during the four years of the Pharm.D. program by taking electives in geriatric pharmacy during the school year and completing one core course in gerontology during each summer. The Pharm.D. and Gerontology curricula must be completed concurrently in order that both degrees be conferred at the same time.

Application to the School of Gerontology should be made during the first year of attendance in the School of Pharmacy. Admission to the School of Gerontology is based on the following criteria:

  • Baccalaureate degree
  • Grade point average
  • Letters of reference
  • Application essay

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is NOT required. All course requirements for both schools must be fulfilled in order for the Certificate to be granted.
