David Truong, Pharm.D., MSAllergan-USC Pharmaceutical Industry Fellow

David Truong started out thinking he'd like to do patient care one-on-one. Now, he's doing it one-on-one million.

A second-year Fellow in the Allergan-USC Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program, Truong is discovering what role pharmacists play in drug development and healthcare, and what a difference their work can make. With Allergan as his classroom, Truong is mentored by scientists, executives and regulators who provide him with valuable "insider training".

"I knew I wanted to use both my Pharm.D. and Master of Regulatory Science degrees in industry, but I didn't know how to combine them," Truong said. "After some soul searching, I applied for the fellowship at Allergan, and that has opened a lot of doors."

Truong spent the first year of his fellowship studying just about every facet of global product development and regulatory affairs, even working briefly in Allergan's U.K. office. Now he’s chosen to come back for a second fellowship year and focus on in-depth work in specific areas.

"As a Fellow, I've been able to continue the learning process instead of working at one job before knowing all of my options. I consider the experience a great investment in my future, and so does Allergan."

Although the Fellowship has teaching, precepting and publishing components, Truong has a fair amount of free time. He uses his weekends to train for half-marathons, spend time with family, and...work.

"I still enjoy the community side of pharmacy, so I work one day a week at a CVS Pharmacy," he explained. "That way, I can stay in touch with what new drugs have hit the market, how they're being used, and what people think of them. I guess it also satisfies my need to connect with patients one-on-one."
