The USC School of Pharmacy offers a PGY1 Residency (1 position) Training Program in Pharmacy Practice at the USC/Norris Cancer Hospital and University Hospital. This program offers a well-balanced structure with resident participation in:
- Clinical practice
- Teaching
- Research
- Administration
Located on the USC Health Sciences Campus, the USC/Norris Cancer Hospital is one of 39 Comprehensive Cancer Centers designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) devoted to cancer treatment, research, prevention and education. The Norris Cancer Hospital is a 60-bed adult tertiary care facility, including a 6-bed Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit, and a 7-bed Intensive Care Unit.
The University Hospital is a modern, 284-bed facility comprised of a 178-bed Medical/Surgical Acute Care Unit, a 44-bed Intensive Care Unit, a 32-bed Comprehensive Medical Rehabilitation Unit, and a 30-bed Psychiatric Care Unit.
Clinical Practice
The Pharmacy Practice Residency Program at USC/Norris Cancer Hospital and University Hospital is divided into eight rotations. The 7-required rotations are:
- Clinical Practice at Norris Cancer Hospital
- Inpatient Hospital Practice
- Medicine - Oncology
- Hematology/Bone Marrow Transplantation
- Ambulatory Care - Clinical Practice at University Hospital
- Infectious Disease
- Solid Organ Transplantation - LAC + USC
- CICU (Coronary Intensive Care Unit) - Longitudinal Rotations (throughout residency year)
- Drug Information (Informatics)
- Administration (Drug Use Policy and Practice Management)
There is also 1-elective rotation where the resident pursues an area of special interest. Elective rotations may include, but are not limited to:
- Drug Information (Kaiser, Downey)
- Emergency Department (LAC+USC)
- Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplantation (City of Hope)
- Geriatrics (UCI Senior Health Center)
- Pediatrics
Teaching
The resident receives a faculty appointment as Lecturer with the USC School of Pharmacy for the 12-month period. Teaching responsibilities include co-precepting Level IV Pharm.D. students in their clinical clerkship rotations, and leading clinical case conferences in the Clinical Therapeutics Series for Level II to III students.
Research
Research classes and seminars are provided to residents. During the year, residents are required to:
- Complete a residency project
- Present the project’s findings at the Western States Conference for Pharmacy Residents, Fellows and Preceptors
- Submit a manuscript for publication prior to the end of the residency
