NEW SCHOLARSHIP
We are pleased to announce a new scholarship for MPA and MHA applicants. The Sacramento Professional Fellowship will be awarded to new students with outstanding professional experience and the potential to be of great service in the public sector or the healthcare field. Details will be provided to all prospective students who attend the April 26th information meeting. (Noon to 1pm at the Center). If you know of someone who would make a great MPA or MHA student let us know!
ENRICHMENT PROGRAM FOR DIVERSITY IN HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT
The third annual Sacramento Summer Enrichment Program for undergraduates will be held in July this year. Students and reacent graduates who are interested in exploring healthcare management and issues of cultural competence in healthcare are invited to apply. 1. Houston I. Fluornoy Professorship in State GovernmentBefore his passing, Hugh’s strong desire to improve and strengthen graduate education in the USC State Capital Center resulted in a donation to establish an endowed professorship. Halfway to being fully funded, USC is committed to complete this endowed professorship to honor Hugh’s decades of service to others. 2. Chester A. Newland Professorship in Public Administration
Professor Newland is one of the most respected figures nationally and internationally in the field of public administration. An endowed USC Price professorship in his name is being created for his lifetime of commitment to teaching and to the field of public administration. Chester Newland presented "Ethical Conduct: Values and Behaviors Underlying Shared Ethics" to the Department of Managed Health Care on Feb 20.Dr. Newland will participate in a number of activities at the ASPA National Conference in Dallas, March 6-11, including the NAPA (National Academy of P.A.) session, the Past Presidents' session, and the National Public Awards Program session.
Paul Danczyk, Associate Director, will present a paper at the ASPA Conference on "The Role of Personal Interactions in Emergency Management--Lessons from California.”
APPRECIATIONS
Our thanks to Kathleen Fullerton, MPA 2006, who was a guest lecturer in Dan Haverty’s PPD 542 class (Program and Policy Evaluation). She spoke about her experiences working in the State Auditor’s Office. Thanks also to the following guest speakers in Elisabeth Kersten’s Professional Practice of Public Administration class: Sharon Huntsman, Executive Director of the CA EDGE Campaign, a nonprofit collective focusing on job training and workforce development; Julia McGinnis, MPA, USC, IT Director for the US Bureau of Reclamation here in Sacramento, and she also represents USBR on regional task force in Denver, Colorado. She discussed organizational development and team building; and Roger Dunstan, Senior Consultant, Senate Health Committee and former director of the Office of Oil Spill Prevention in state government. He discussed crisis management and health reform. The class also toured Citrus Heights City Hall and met with Henry Tingle, City Manager and Stefani Daniell, Budget Director of Citrus Heights, thanks to the coordinating efforts of Hilary Straus, MPA student and Assistant to the City Manager.RECENT EVENTS
Lunch with Angela Pan, MPA alumna, who is currently in the US Foreign Service in Indonesia.Recruiters on Campus – alumni and representatives from state agencies and organizations were on campus to tell students about opportunities for work in state service. MPA alumnae Vivian Gerlach, Cynthia Reed and MHA alumna Ellen Badley spoke about the EDD, MRMIB and DMHC, respectively. Other organizations represented were: BSA, DOJ, CECR (OIG), and the LAO. Interview Workshop –Presented by MPA alumna Linda Brughelli, with the Attorney General’s Office. This workshop offered advice and insights on the interview process as well as tips on how to do your best.
Careers in the Nonprofit Field – MPA alumnae Liz Hall, Tanya Kleinmann, and Donna Sneeringer came to campus to talk to students about careers in the nonprofit sector.
Carlos Urrutia , DPA, spoke to students about city management, board relations, and economic development.

Vicky Cha, MHA 2003, recently relocated to Moberly Missouri and accepted a position as the Administrative Director/Operations of the hospital at Moberly Regional Medical Center. “I'm completing a CEO program through Community Health Systems (CHS) and the goal is to rotate me through a few CHS facilities to understand the operations of CHS. I'm half way through the program now and will hopefully complete it within the next two years.” vicky_cha@chs.net
