Call for Papers

Submission Guidelines

Eligibility: Currently enrolled doctoral students from a wide range of academic fields both in the United States and abroad are invited to participate in the SPPD Doctoral Conference by submitting an abstract that falls within the conference theme. Eligible academic fields include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Anthropology
  • Business Administration
  • Disaster Management
  • Ecology
  • Economics
  • Environmental Studies
  • Geography
  • History
  • International Development
  • Political Science
  • Public Administration and Management
  • Public Health
  • Public Policy
  • Real Estate Development
  • Sociology
  • Urban Planning
  • Urban Studies

Abstract Format and Content: Abstracts are to be submitted online and should not exceed 500 words in length. Do not attach full bibliographies, reports, or full papers. Abstract content should contain:

  • Central theme and research question to be addressed
  • Research approach and methodology
  • Relevance of your work and expected findings
  • Key data sources
  • Key references that place your work in the field

If you think that any of these requirements are inappropriate for your work, please provide other relevant information.

Deadline for abstract submittal is December 1, 2005.

Review of Abstracts: Abstracts will be reviewed by established and emerging scholars in their respective fields. You will be notified of acceptance by February 15, 2006 and invited to submit a full conference paper at that time. Whether or not your abstract is accepted, you should expect to receive helpful comments.

Conference Papers: Conference papers may not exceed 4,000 words, excluding notes and bibliography. Up to 30 papers will be selected for presentation at the conference. Papers are to be submitted by e-mail to the USC SPPD Doctoral Student Conference Committee at DocsConf@usc.edu

Deadline for submittal of full conference paper is May 3, 2006.

Submittal Schedule: The following submittal and registration schedule must be observed:

Dec. 1, 2005 Abstract submission deadline
Feb. 15, 2006 Notice of acceptance with comments on abstract
March 15, 2006 Conference Registration Deadline to be eligible for the $100 fee rate
May 3, 2006 Paper due to the SPPD Doctoral Student Conference Committee
June 22-23, 2006 Conference
