USC State Capital Center Opportunities for MHA Students

SPPD has a long history of providing training to those who possess or will assume leadership roles in healthcare. The University of Southern California maintains a facility at the USC State Capital in Sacramento at which MHA students may take a particular class, spend a semester, or complete the entire MHA.

Faculty are drawn from the USC tenure track faculty as well as from the healthcare community in Northern California. Required and elective classes for the MHA program are offered each semester at the Center.

Intensive classes meet in Sacramento over two four-day extended weekends, enabling students from various locations to attend class in Sacramento and participate in the professional community of students, faculty, alumni and advisory board members.

Administrative residencies are available at state, nonprofit and for-profit healthcare organizations in Northern California, including Kaiser Permanente, Mercy Healthcare, Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Sutter Health, UC Davis Health System, California Department of Managed Health Care and others. A residency workshop is held each year to help students plan for their residency.

Fitting the program into your life

Most students in Sacramento work full-time while in the MHA program. Taking two classes per semester, fall and spring, and one class in the summer, most students complete the bulk of their coursework in two years and spend a third year completing a full-time paid residency.

Career

The State Capital Center Career Office offers a number of services to interested students. Meeting alumni and students active in various aspects of the healthcare field, including state, local private and non-profit, is facilitated by attending networking events in Sacramento, including a holiday reception in early December, the annual Capitol Career Day in the spring, and Career Conversations with Professionals at noon on selected Fridays. A calendar of career activities is posted on the web.

Students interested in learning about internships and employment opportunities in Sacramento should schedule a meeting with Virginia Kaser, Director of Career Services, for advising and introduction to the network in Sacramento.
