New Book Published on Innovations in Public Leadership Development

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new book "Innovations in Public Leadership Development" (eds by Ricardo S. Morse and Terry F. Buss), which includes a chapter on designing and delivering leadership programs by Dr. Rich Callahan, Associate Dean and Director of Leadership Programs. The book includes discussions of leadership frameworks, competencies for public leaders for the "new governance," and strategies for senior leaders in government.

Rich Callahan Wins Networks and Public Management Syllabus Competition, Fels Institute of Government, University of Pennsylvania

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Rich Callahan, Associate Dean and Director of Leadership Programs has won first place and a $10,000 prize in the Networks and Public Management Syllabus Competition sponsored by the Smith Richardson Foundation and the Fels Institute of Government, University of Pennsylvania. The competition seeks to encourage the development of new teaching approaches to incorporate cutting-edge theory about networks into practical tools for public management.
Selection of the finalists and of the award winner were made by a committee of scholars in the field chaired by Fels Institute Director Don Kettl.

Elisabeth Kersten Joins SPPD Sacramento Faculty

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Elisabeth Kersten as a clinical professor at SPPD and distinguished practitioner in residence based in Sacramento. In this half-time role, she will teach and develop policy outreach, connecting SPPD to the legislature and state government. Elisabeth brings strong policy analysis, fiscal analysis, policy research, and teaching skills to our school.
Her teaching will include two MPA courses in Sacramento: Professional Practices in Public Administration (PPD 546) and Political Leadership in Public Organizations (PPD 657). She will also help to develop and implement SPPD's strategy for policy outreach to state government and build collaborations between SPPD faculty and state policymakers that will improve SPPD's contribution to policy dialogue in the policy process.
Elisabeth served as director of the Senate Office of Research for 20 years, a bipartisan think tank developing policy and preparing studies for the 40 members of the California State Senate. Prior to joining the Senate Office of Research she served as Deputy Chief of Staff to Assembly Speaker Willie L. Brown, Jr., consultant to the fiscal committees in the Senate and Assembly and deputy director in two executive agencies, the Department of Consumer Affairs and the Department of Employment Development.
By directly engaging the policymaking community in Sacramento, we maximize the value of our research and its potential impact on communities not only in California but also across the country and throughout the world. Elisabeth's wide experience in public administration and her many professional and research accomplishments will be a valuable asset to the students and the school and will help to strengthen our policy outreach activities in Sacramento.
