STUDENT RECRUITMENT

January 15, 2008 is the deadline for student who wish to apply for a scholarship and admission for Fall 2008. The final deadline for fall admission is July 1st.

NEWLAND PROFESSORSHIP

A fund-raising effort has begun for The Chester A. Newland Professorship in Public Administration. Honoring our popular and deserving professor, matching funds are being offered through the Morris S. Smith Foundation, spearheaded by Sterling and Larry Franklin.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Lunch with an alum who is currently in the US Foreign Service in Indonesia: Friday, Jan. 4th. RSVP at kaser@usc.edu.

Individual Resume Review – alumni to review students’ resumes and provide constructive advice. Jan. 18.

Recruiters on Campus – alumni and representatives from state agencies and organizations will be on campus to tell students about opportunities for work in state service –Friday, Jan. 25 and Friday, Feb. 29.

Capitol Career Day – students from LA and Northern California will spend the day at the capitol learning about careers in the legislative and executive branches. Friday, Feb. 1.

Interview Workshop –This workshop will offer advice and insights on the interview process as well as tips on how to do your best. Friday, Feb 15.

Careers in the Nonprofit Field – alumni will come to campus to talk to students about careers in the nonprofit sector. Friday, Feb. 8.

FACULTY AND STAFF NEWS

Rich Callahan, Director and Associate Dean, was awarded Best Syllabus for a Networks and Public Management course. The competition was held by the Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania. Congratulations, Rich! Stanley Oppegard, friend of the Center and former Advisory Board member, has been appointed deputy secretary for veterans' homes at the California Department of Veterans Affairs.

Deanna Bassett, MHA 1997, is still with Ernst & Young, but has moved from Cleveland to Minneapolis and from Accounting and Auditing to Human Relations, where she leads efforts to improve the corporate culture through more gender/ethnic diversity, an open environment from an LGBT perspective, and friendliness to people with disabilities.

Merlyn Calderon, MPA 2005, has left the US State Department and returned to California where she is now Deputy Political Director of the United Farm Workers of America. mcalderon@ufw.org

Scott Christman, MPLD 2005, has left OSHPD and accepted a position as Account Executive for State Government with Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. schristman@esri.com

Eric Johnson, MPA 2004, reports that he is splitting his time between CalHFA (previously he was full-time there) and the Department of Managed Health Care. At DMHC, he’s working on long-term planning and outcomes, and figuring out ways to help plans, providers and patients be more invested in helping people get the right care at the right time.

Torreyanna Johnson, MPA 2006, serves as Senior Communications Specialist in the Superintendent’s/Communications Office for the Elk Grove Unified School District. She is also serving as Miss Black Sacramento!

Jenny Little, MPA 2006, has accepted a new position as Business Analyst of European Markets for Sierra Environmental Technologies, Inc.. an environmental consulting firm based in London. The company operates in the UK, France, Germany, Canada and Carmel. She will spend half her time in Carmel. jennifer.little@sierraenvironmental.net

Jason Spencer, MPA in progress, has accepted the position of Senior Associate with Townsend Public Affairs, Inc. in their Sacramento office.

Tanya Robinson Taylor, MHA in progress, has left the California Endowment and accepted the position of Consultant with the Assembly Health Committee.

Lisa Taylor Tulee, MPA 2004, was recommended to the City of San Jose’s elite leadership academy called the Art and Practice of Leadership and just graduated from it in December 2007. She has a new position (as of June 2007)—Manager of Program Performance in the City of San Jose’s Environmental Services Department.
