Eco-Industrial Development in Bassett Creek Valley, Minneapolis, Minnesota

An approved inner-city revitalization plan in Bassett Creek Valley calls for the conversion of half of the current industrial property to residential and recreational uses. By focusing on efficient land use, clean-up and redevelopment of underutilized brownfields, and community-wide resource efficiencies, Bassett Creek Valley hopes to retain much of the existing industrial base and neighborhood jobs.

This eco-industrial development project is in Phase 2, developing the Master Plan. The Master Plan phase of the project provides a detailed program for renovation and/or new development for the Valley's businesses that maximizes land and general resource efficiency, and minimizes overall environmental impacts. Other major components of the Master Plan include design guidelines and conceptual design documents. Upon completion of the Master Plan, project personnel will estimate the costs of the conceptual design and identify prospective funding sources.

Businesses currently in the valley will benefit financially by improving their operating efficiencies and reducing environmental impacts. The City of Minneapolis will benefit by reducing its costs for land acquisition and relocation, an increased property tax base, and the revitalization of land. Residents of Bassett Creek Valley will benefit from the retention of good jobs, more environmentally sound industrial activities, and new land for residential development.
