AppointmentsIf you are a student on the University Park campus, you may schedule an intake appointment by walking in or calling (213) 740-7711. Please let us know if you would like to see someone of a certain gender, ethnicity or other demographic – we will try our best to accommodate you. At peak times during the semester, there can be a wait for an intake appointment. For those who prefer not to wait for an intake, you may request a Mental Health Consultation for a referral to an outside provider. For those who prefer to be seen off-campus, you may also request a Mental Health Consultation for a referral. About intake appointmentsAn intake appointment is a private, individual meeting with a counselor that lasts 45-50 minutes. In this meeting you will have the opportunity to talk about your concerns, difficulties and reasons for seeking counseling. The assessment will take into consideration the duration and nature of your concerns or struggles. Following your intake session, your counselor may refer you to: Individual counseling at the center Group counseling at the center Individual counseling with an outside provider About Mental Health ConsultationsA Mental Health Consultation is a 15 minute meeting to obtain a referral to a provider in the community. You will have the opportunity to explain your referral preferences and complete the necessary paperwork. When you know you prefer to be seen for open-ended (longer-term) therapy or you prefer a community referral, you can call to request a Mental Health Consultation. If you have the USC student insurance plan, the counselor will provide you with several names for you to obtain services. If you are covered under another plan, the counselor may help explain the process of contacting your insurance company or discuss lower-cost, community counseling center alternatives. All referrals take into consideration your insurance, financial and transportation resources, and individual needs. Canceling AppointmentsFailure to cancel your Intake appointment or psychiatric appointment will result in a $25 fee. To cancel an appointment, please call at least 24 hours in advance. If you miss two intake appointments (either by canceling or not showing), you will be referred to the Director of Counseling Services for assistance.
