Individual Counseling

About this service

After an initial appointment, you may be referred to individual counseling either at the center, off-campus, or you may be referred to a group at the center. Many students report that counseling is helpful to them because they can…

Talk privately in a safe environment about personal concerns

Experience the attention and support of a professional counselor who is entirely focused on their concerns

Identify and express their feelings about past experiences

Explore ways to manage stress, anxiety, sadness or frustration

Learn ways to help themselves feel better now and in the future

It is typical to feel a bit nervous if you have never been to individual counseling. It is difficult to know what to expect. However, most students are surprised at how “normal” the experience is compared to what is shown on television or in the movies.

Student Counseling Services utilizes a short-term model to help students cope with the challenges of college life such as adjustment difficulties, academic related stress, and relationship problems, etc. The time-limited model (12 session limit) is generally intended to cover your entire academic career at USC. Counselors regularly provide referrals following your sessions at the center in order for you to continue work on any additional concerns.

How to utilize this service

In order to be seen for individual counseling, you must first make an intake appointment. The counselor will listen to your concerns and assess the optimal service for you depending on the nature of your concerns. Based on the counselor’s clinical evaluation, you will either be seen at the center or referred to a practitioner in the community. Please note that there is a $25 fee for missed intake appointments.

If you know you prefer to be seen in longer term or you simply prefer a community referral, you can call to request a Mental Health Consultation. Requesting a referral is also an option for those students who prefer not to wait for an intake during busy times of the semester. All referrals take into consideration your insurance, financial and transportation resources, and individual needs.
