Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program in College Mental Health
Training of postdoctoral fellows in college mental health at the University of Southern California is a collaborative effort among three departments: Student Counseling Services, Disability Services and Athletic Department. The training program is an endeavor that is supported by our staff. The staff's professional identity is clearly associated with being a part of an APA accredited pre-doctoral internship program and an APPIC member post-doctoral fellowship program.
Program Description
The University of Southern California, Division of Student Affairs, offers two postdoctoral fellowships in College Mental Health, each with a separate track; one with a specialization in Disability Services, and the other track with a specialization in Sports Psychology. We established Track #1 postdoctoral fellowship in 1998 and obtained APPIC membership in 2000. In 2005 Track #2 was created and was added as part of our APPIC member postdoctoral fellowship program in 2006.
The central training goal for both fellowships is that the postdoctoral fellows complete their training in college mental health with advanced knowledge, confidence, and competence in the following areas of clinical practice: short-term therapy, group counseling, awareness and appreciation of human diversity, professional ethics and decision making, crisis intervention, outreach/consultation, and clinical supervision. The following is a brief description of the subspecialty for each fellowship:
Track #1-----College Mental Health and Disability Services:
The 12-month fellowship has an emphasis in clinical assessment, including conducting psychoeducational assessments of learning disabilities and ADHD. The fellow divides his or her time between the Student Counseling Services and the Disability Services. The fellow provides clinical services to students with disabilities who register with the Disability Services and Programs office as well as the general student population that seek services with USC Student Counseling Services.
Track #2-----College Mental Health and Sports Psychology:
The 12-month fellowship has an emphasis in providing clinical services to the student athletes who seek services with USC Student Counseling Services as well as outreach and consultation to student athletes within the USC Athletic Department.
