Postdoctoral Fellowship
Training Philosophy and Goals
As a training program our primary goal is to provide opportunities and support that will help develop highly ethical, culturally sensitive and clinically competent postdoctoral fellows as they prepare for licensure and an entry level psychologist position. To fulfill this goal, we hope to provide a safe learning environment that encourages interaction, risk taking, honest self-appraisal, collaboration and team work. Our program offers a variety of clinical, supervisory, consultative and administrative experiences that are intended to provide a clear picture of what it is like to work as a psychologist at a university setting.
We view the training process as a complex, dynamic and interactive process that involves past experiences, new experiences, personal growth, evaluation, modeling, relationship building and professional identity. In keeping with our training philosophy and goals, our postdoctoral fellow program emphasizes an applied advanced training model that is supported by mentoring, teaching, and supervision. Furthermore, the training provided is grounded in the science of psychology, particularly as it relates to applied practice.
As stated in our brochure, the central training goal is that the postdoctoral fellow completes his or her internship with advanced knowledge, confidence, and competence in the following areas of clinical practice:
short term therapy
group counseling
awareness and appreciation of human diversity
professional ethics and decision making
clinical assessment
crisis intervention
clinical supervision
outreach and consultation
psychoeducational assessment (Track #1 only)
In addition, the training provides opportunities for our postdoctoral fellows to become acquainted with the administration of a university based counseling center, the specialty training site, as well as participate in various committees that coordinate the training program.
