Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program in College Mental Health
Track 2 - College Mental Health and Sports Psychology

One of our primary goals is to provide opportunities, structure and support that will help develop clinically competent, diversity and culturally sensitive and highly ethical postdoctoral fellows as they prepare for licensure and for an entry level psychologist position. The other primary goal is to offer emerging psychologists the opportunity to develop the expertise to work with student athletes. Additionally, the fellowship provides a variety of clinical, supervisory, consultative and administrative experiences that are intended to provide a clear picture of what it is like to work as a staff psychologist both at a university counseling center and an athletic department. We believe the unique combination of college mental health services and athletic department programming provides experience in a growing niche within the profession of psychology.

Duties within the Student Counseling Services include individual psychotherapy, crisis intervention and groups for USC student-athletes. Duties within the Athletic Department include the organization, management, and administration of a mental health program for student-athletes. The postdoctoral fellow will monitor and supervise program participants, conduct outreach and workshops for the program, and work cooperatively with athletic department staff. The fellow will work under the supervision of a California licensed psychologist and the liaison for the athletic department at the NCAA Division I University with 20 teams and approximately 600 student-athletes.

The central training goal of the program is that the postdoctoral fellows complete their fellowship with advanced knowledge, confidence, and competence in the following areas of clinical practice:

short term therapy

awareness and appreciation of human diversity

professional ethics and decision making

clinical assessment

outreach and consultation with an athletic department

knowledge of issues specific to college student-athletes

understanding and experience in working with student-athletes

collaboration with athletic department staff, administration, and counselors

on-call/crisis intervention

clinical supervision

Meeting Licensing Requirements

Satisfactory completion of the postdoctoral training program meets postdoctoral supervised practice requirements for licensure in the State of California.

The training methods include the following:

  1. Direct Service: individual, couples and group counseling; crisis intervention;
  2. Supervision: individual supervision (3 hours a week) and supervision of groups/other (1 hour);
  3. Clinical conferences: intake conferences and diversity case conferences;
  4. Training seminars: Professional development series in crisis intervention, psychiatric consultation, and outside speaker series;
  5. Outreach and consultation: working with an athletic department.

Training Staff and Office Location

The training staff at the Student Counseling Services includes nine psychologists, one psychiatrist, three clinical social workers and part-time staff. The staff at the Department of Athletics with whom the postdoc fellow will work collaboratively include the Coordinator of the Mentor Program and the Life Skills Coordinator within Student Athlete Academic Services. The postdoctoral fellow’s office is located at the Student Counseling Services as well as a shared office located in the Department of Athletics.

Our postdoctoral fellow provides services and receives training in both departments. The fellow is supervised primarily by Robin Scholefield, Ph.D. and Timmy Lee, Ph.D.
