--- Welcome ---

We, the Office of International Services (OIS), are delighted that you have chosen to continue your education here! We look forward to welcoming you and assisting you in adjusting to the USC campus and the greater Los Angeles community.

Coming to USC and Los Angeles to study provides you with the chance to experience the rich diversity of cultures, foods, languages and traditions of the world. Last year USC hosted over 5,500 international students from 115 different countries, in addition there were more then 1,200 visiting scholars and professors from abroad on campus. Thus, we are truly an international university.

Studying on such an international campus is both an opportunity and a challenge. Because of the number of international students, there are probably students from your homeland already enrolled. Therefore it is easy to be ON the USC campus but not part OF the USC community. Keep in mind that in addition to acquiring a world class academic education here, you are also expected to learn how to succeed in this world of differences. To do so it is critical that you learn to recognize, understand and respect people with traditions, cultures and languages that are different from your own.

You are coming to the United States at a very important time. Ever since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, international education exchange has received unprecedented attention. We realize that you may have experienced difficulties in getting your visa as a result of processing changes. At the same time this means that you now have a special responsibility. We ask you to take the initiative to meet American students in your classes, in your residence hall, in libraries, in university dining facilities, and everywhere else on campus. One thing that is very true: you will never have a friend, whom you did not first meet. Take full advantage of the opportunity that USC provides to establish friendships both with Americans and other students from around the world studying here.

Please know that our office will always be available to assist you while you are enrolled. We wish you every success as you acquire the education and the life skills required in this interdependent world!

Sincerely,

Dixon C. Johnson
Executive Director of the Office of International Services and
Associate Dean of Student Affairs
