SCitizen Projects
An Inside View of Two South Los Angeles Community Programs, People and Neighborhoods
Facilitators: Dr. Elaine Bell Kaplan and Brenda Pesante
Abstract:
This project will introduce students to the history, people and community programs in the surrounding South Los Angeles neighborhood with a focus on two important family related issues: the schooling of neighborhood children and family problems faced by many of these children. Participants will have a chance to learn about the Neighborhood Academic Initiative program (NAI), a USC funded tutorial program for local middle-school students. Students will also visit a battered women's shelter, meet the Director of the shelter, and have lunch with women who live there. After the visit, the students will be taken on a bus tour of the surrounding community where they will learn about the history of and current concerns of the community. The tour will end at the African American Firefighters Museum where we will learn more about the history of this community. This project should give the students an opportunity to think about issues of social justice and service needs of these children and their families.
