The USC women's golf team continued to show improvement with a sixth-place tie shared with Kentucky at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., last weekend.
USC was the only West Coast school in a tournament that featured 16 schools -- five of which ranked in the top 20.
The Women of Troy shot a 309 on the second day of play -- 18 shots behind champion Duke at 291 and 20 shots back of second-round leader Wake Forest at 289. Although USC improved on the third day with a 298, it wasn't enough to beat Duke, which posted a score of 884, three strokes better than the Deacons' 887.
USC ended the tournament at 33-over-par.
USC freshman Nicole Dalkas finished tied for ninth at the event, despite shooting a 70 in the final day of tournament play, and finished with a 2-over-par, 221 -- 10 shots behind individual champion Jenny Chuasiriporn of Duke.
Chuasiriporn, who won her second consecutive tournament, shot 69-70-72 for a final score of 211 -- eight strokes under par and four strokes better than the Deacons' Alexandra Armas.
USC sophomore Linda Ishii improved from last week's Dick McGuire Tournament, where she shot a 15-over-par with a 41st-place finish. She improved to 14th place this weekend -- two shots behind teammate Dalkas.
USC's next tournament begins Oct. 13 at the Edean Ihanfeldt Invitational, hosted by Washington at Sahalee Country Club in Seattle, Wash.
