The University of Southern California was proud to present the sixth annual LA Jazz '99, the largest free jazz festival in Los Angeles. This four day festival offered 16 free performances from April 19th through the 22nd, at noon and 5pm in Alumni Park, followed by evening concerts at 7 and 8pm in Bovard Auditorium.
The festival included jazz luminary David Sanchez, who the New York Times described as "carrying Latin jazz toward the millennium." The multi-talented figure in the Southern California arts scene, Kamau Daaood, who was widely acknowledged as a major driving force behind Los Angeles' black cultural Renaissance, appeared as well. The festival culminated with the critically acclaimed McCoy Tyner Trio which performed, recorded, and toured worldwide.
LA Jazz 1999 was Los Angeles's premiere jazz event.
