From Nixon to Clinton, Watergate to Whitewater, few Americans have observed the ups and downs of presidential leadership more closely over the past thirty years than David Gergen. A White House adviser to four presidents, both Republican and Democrat, he offers a vivid, behind-the-scenes account of their struggles to exercise power and draws from them key lessons for leaders of the future. Gergen served as director of communications for President Reagan and held positions in the administrations of Presidents Nixon and Ford. In 1993, he put his country before politics when he agreed to first serve as counselor to President Clinton on both foreign policy and domestic affairs, then as special international adviser to the president and to Secretary of State Warren Christopher.

Currently a professor of public service and the director of the Center for Public Leadership at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, David Gergen is also editor-at-large at U.S. News & World Report and a Senior Political Analyst for CNN, making frequent appearances on the popular program Anderson Cooper 360. His book entitled, Eyewitness to Power: The Essence of Leadership, Nixon to Clinton, has landed on the New York Times Bestseller list.
