Gay and Lesbian Athletes
Waite Phillips Hall 403
According to "The Loneliest Athlete," a 2002 article published in The Chronicle of Higher Education, "there are no openly gay athletes in the professional major leagues in baseball, basketball, football, or hockey."
On Thursday, October 1, at noon, the USC Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center will host a panel discussion and lunch to discuss this article and examine the pressures and hardships that closeted gay and lesbian athletes experience. Panelists and attendees will try to gain an understanding of why these athletes remain closeted.
The panelists are professional staff members who have worked with closeted athletes and include Bob Corb, Sport Psychology Program Director for UCLA Counseling & Psychological Services; Donna Heinel, Assistant Admissions Coordinator in USC Athletics; Portia L. Mitchell, a former USC Women's Basketball player; and Robin Scholefield, a psychologist at USC University Park Health Center.
