"Never Perfect" Documentary Screening and Q&A with Director Regina Park
Join Asian Pacific American Student Services for a screening of “Never Perfect,” a documentary that explores the complex journey of a young Vietnamese American woman’s struggle with popular perceptions of beauty and body image as she fights the stigma of racial self-hatred in her decision to undergo cosmetic surgery. The event is co-hosted by the Vietnamese Student Association and the Asian Pacific American Student Assembly.
This documentary explores the way that popular media has moved toward a generic and idealized notion of beauty. The result -- women all over the world battle the myriad influences affecting their body image and self-perceptions in the race to achieve “perfection.”
The film focuses on Asian women, who experience particular cultural and social pressure to strive for high standards of achievement and flawlessness. Among ethnic patients, the number of Asian Americans seeking plastic and cosmetic surgery has risen 55 percent from 2004 to 2006.
