Evan Calbi – Editor, University Publications
Formerly the marketing coordinator at the Thornton School of Music, Evan Calbi is the newest wordsmith to join University Publications.
Calbi, originally from the Bay Area, created his own journalism bachelor's program in the Political Science Department of Occidental College. He worked at neighboring Mount St. Mary's College as a marketing and publications manager for its chamber music society before relocating to USC in 2006.
Two of Calbi's joys are music and publications. "I enjoy working for universities," he added, saying that his positive experience at Mount St. Mary's encouraged him to pursue positions at USC. He especially courted a job at Thornton for the opportunity to work on commemorative publications for the school.
Now as an editor at University Publications, Calbi will juggle numerous projects including the fall Schedule of Classes, the USC Catalogue and SCampus.
"I've always liked putting things together," he says. "There's that enjoyment of sending publications off to print."
When he's not editing, Calbi is pursuing his master's degree in professional writing at USC. He also plays the bass and hits the pool with the Masters Swim Program. He hopes to compete in his second triathlon later this year.
Sue Vogl, the director of University Publications, said Calbi had the right mix of skills and his experience in higher education made him that much more desirable for the position. "His professional background has a really nice combination of both editorial work and Web work, as well as knowledge of photography, which makes him a really good fit," she said.
