Janice Schafrik-Arsenault – Coordinator of Testing Accommodations, Disability Services and Academic Support

April 2008
Janice Schafrik-Arsenault

Janice Schafrik-Arsenault is by no means new to USC. She earned a master of education and a doctorate in counseling psychology here, spent over a decade as an adjunct associate professor at the Rossier School of Education, teaching research methods and design and in April joined the staff of Disability Services and Academic Support Programs as the coordinator of testing accommodations and assessment outcomes.

Life at USC seems to have agreed with her. “I think USC’s a very dynamic environment," she says. "There’s a lot of diversity in what we can do. I love working with the students, the faculty and the staff. It’s just a very bright, dynamic group of individuals.”

Schafrik-Arsenault now manages much of the behind-the-scenes work in assessing student needs for Disabilities Services, developing and arranging testing accommodations for disabled students.

And as the coordinator of assessment outcomes, Schafrik-Arsenault evaluates the programs offered at Disability Services and Academic Support on both a qualitative and a quantitative level—work that is part statistics and part human interest.

“The question is, does it work?" she says. "That’s what I do. And it looks like the programs do really well. We’ve got a lot of creative people in this department who have generated great programs that are very cutting-edge. We’re the frontrunners in creating new programs for students."

Though she hails originally from Winnipeg, she came to Los Angeles with her family at a young age and has enjoyed a long academic career in its schools and universities. She grew up in El Segundo and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and economics from UCLA.
