Undergraduate Student Government (USG) President Jens Midthun, a senior majoring in economics, serves as the chief representative of undergraduate students, oversees all four branches of USG and sits on a number of university boards and committees.

Midthun was elected in February and, with the help of his predecessor, immediately transitioned into the position. Previously, he served as the USG director of campus affairs.

This semester Midthun has already made improvements to undergraduate life at USC—particularly concerning student safety. Recently, USG created a partnership with a local taxi company so students could use discretionary dollars on their USCards to pay for trips.

“This service gives students another convenient and safe option in addition to Campus Cruiser to get home, operating 24/7 with no destination boundaries,” says Midthun.

In addition, Midthun has been hard at work with the city of Los Angeles to have a stoplight constructed at the intersection of 28th and Hoover streets, a high-traffic area between the Row and off-campus student housing.

He has also made sure that undergraduate students are given the chance to be heard. “This [USG] administration keeps the needs and the interests of the students at the forefront,” says Associate Dean of Students Patrick Bailey.

In his free time, Midthun likes to play the guitar, participate in air-guitar competitions and travel. He also serves as a vice president of the Interfraternity Council and is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

After he graduates in spring 2009, Midthun hopes to go into investment banking or financial consulting.

His favorite thing about being at USC is the Trojan Marching Band.

“I just think they’re awesome. I wasn’t completely set on USC until I came to Orientation and saw them perform. After that, it was a done deal.”
