Marla Clemens Brings Fresh Perspective To Radiology Department

For Marla Clemens, her position as office assistant in the radiology department of the University Park Health Center is more than just a job — it's an opportunity to connect with the world of her children and her children's generation.

Clemens, whose son is a junior at USC, said the job fell into her lap serendipitously in August 2007 and brought her back into the college world at the same time her son entered it.

"The job is very interesting to me because I enjoy the energy of campus life. It's so different," Clemens says. "I love working with the students, and it's wonderful to interact with them. I've been out of the academic world for a while, and this brings me back into it, so I can see what this generation is all about."

At the Health Center, Clemens assists in patient coordination, registration and documentation for patient exams. She is a trained radiology technician and takes X-rays as well.

"Marla coordinates the registrations and reports for our office. Because she is also licensed as a radiology technician, she often steps in to take X-rays for us. She's very valuable here," said Mitch Hunt, radiologic technologist at the University Park Health Center.

Last summer, the Student Health Center decided to switch its system for keeping medical records.

"It has been a year of trying to get the system working with the system that's already established, but we're getting there," she says. "This job has allowed me to really brush up my skills and catch up with the technology while being in an academic environment. At this point it's the perfect job for this time in my life."
