Sagar Patel, a junior from Diamond Bar majoring in biology and minoring in Spanish, helped initiate a dramatic change in greek recruitment practices – USC’s very first dry rush.

Sagar has served as the vice president of recruitment for the Intrafraternity Council (IFC) for two consecutive years. Through his involvement with the IFC, he has proven to be an involved and active student leader. “I have enjoyed making the greek community a better place by revealing the opportunities it provides, the life experience you gain and what it has given me,” he said.

The push for the elimination of alcohol during rush, along with careful monitoring, has consumed a great deal of this baccalaureate/MD student's time. But Sager’s persistence paid off when the number of students joining fraternities increased 36 percent.

“The first dry rush required our IFC board to create a system and process from scratch,” Sagar said. “We explained [to fraternity leaders] why dry rush was a necessity and made people understand the benefits. Because of that [the program] far exceeded expectations.”

After graduating in 2007, Sagar plans on attending USC’s Keck School of Medicine.
