41 STEPHEN W. BENNETT is retired and lives in St. George, Utah. He is the former director of the Polynesian Cultural Center of Hawaii and worked for many years to preserve the culture of the people of the South Pacific 48 LUCERNE (SASINE) HAMER and ROBERT CLARENCE HAMER 49 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Jan. 22, 1999. The couple met on campus following Bobs World War II service in the U.S. Navy; Lucerne was affiliated with Gamma Phi Beta and Bob belonged to Delta Sigma Phi. Bob worked in the mortgage banking business until 1984, when the couple retired to Carpinteria, Calif. JACK DeBAR SMITH is the author of The Iconoclast Goes to Sea: Dilemma in Blues (Dorrance Publishing Co. Inc.), a wry and colorful look at life in the U.S. Navy at the commencement of World War II. Following his naval service, Smith owned his own insurance agency for 30 years and is now retired in Van Nuys, Calif., with his wife, Janet. CURLEE ROSS MD 57 recently spent two weeks in Khabarovsk, Russia, as a business consultant to a family-medicine clinic. Ross work was part of a concerted effort to train a large number of Russian physicians in the family-medicine specialty. PAYNE B. JOHNSON was named guest curator for his exhibition, Path to the Lost Cities: In the Footsteps of the Maya Explorers, on display through May 16, 1999, at the San Diego Museum of Man. The exhibit is based on Johnsons retracing of the 1839-1842 expedition that led to the discovery of the Maya civilization. ALTHEA J. HORNER PhD has written Chrysalis (Monbijou Press), a novel about two women who have forgotten how to love. Connie Phillips, a New York book editor, is a captive of her own sexuality but is ignorant of what her heart truly desires. Psychologist Margaret Stern long ago cast her lot with her intellect and is now a prisoner of that decision. They meet as patient and psychologist. NORMAN WILLIS PharmD has been named the regional director of Asereth Medical Services in Pasadena, Calif. WENDELL HOLLOWAY MA, MPA 73, PhD 75, has been appointed interim president of Bowie State University in Adelphi, Md. He is taking a leave from his post on the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland, which oversees Bowie State and 10 other public institutions. Holloway helped organize and support USCs Washington Public Affairs Center in its start-up years, 1973-75. CAROL J. RUSSO was one of three recipients of the Oklahoma Bar Associations Courageous Lawyer Award for giving of her time and experience to help a citizen in need. She is a solo practitioner in Tulsa. BRUCE L. MEGOWAN MBA 79 has been elected to serve as chairman of the board of the Building Owners and Managers Association of Greater Los Angeles. He is senior real estate director at Chadwick, Saylor & Co. Inc. WARREN N. SPIKES has been promoted to vice president of operations for State Farm Insurance Co. in Newark, Ohio. He was most recently executive assistant at State Farms corporate headquarters in Bloomington, Ill. Spikes has been listed in Marquis Whos Who in American Finance and Industry. WILLIAM F. FAHEY was appointed to a judgeship in the Superior Court for the County of Los Angeles by former Gov. Pete Wilson. Fahey, who lives in Manhattan Beach, was previously a partner with the firm of Hanna & Morton. DAVID H. HANNAH, president of Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co., headquartered in Los Angeles, has assumed the additional role of chief executive officer for the company. ESSIE TRAMEL-SECK MSW, DSW 81, is one of 28 African-American women included in Women in Courage II, an inspirational book published by Nestle USA featuring the true stories of contemporary individuals who overcame great odds in their pursuit of excellence. Tramel-Seck is an assistant professor in USCs School of Social Work. Actor LARRY UDY appeared in an episode of the television series ER and a Hey, Beer Man! commercial. GENE POKORNY has been principal tuba of the Chicago Symphony for the past 10 years. In addition to performing and teaching, he wrote a chapter on orchestral auditions for The Tuba Source Book, published in 1996 by Indiana University Press. Pokorny and his wife, Beth, live in Oak Park, Ill. BOB SCHNEIDER DDS was awarded the 1998 Excellence in Education Award by the National Association of Dental Laboratories. Schneider is the clinical director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Implant Center and an associate professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of Iowa. CRAIG S. STERN PharmD, MBA 94, has been selected as the new editor-in-chief of the Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy. BILL WORKMAN MPA was honored with the Corona Distinguished Citizens Award for his professional and civic contributions. He has been city manager of Corona, Calif., since 1996. FERRIS D. KAPLAN MA 79 was appointed to the new position of group senior vice president for strategic planning and member services at the American Advertising Federation in Washington, D.C. He was previously director of business development and marketing for the American Red Cross. JOHN NABER compiled and edited Awaken the Olympian Within: Stories from Americas Greatest Olympic Motivators (Griffin Publishing), a collection of inspirational essays from 29 Olympians. Naber won four gold medals in swimming at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and has been a commentator and host on ABCs Wide World of Sports and on ESPN. He is also a motivational speaker and president of Naber & Associates Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in sports-related marketing. BRADLEY R. WILLIAMS PharmD, associate dean of external affairs, associate professor of clinical pharmacy and gerontology, USC schools of Pharmacy and Gerontology, participated in a discussion series on what it means to grow older in America, held at the Duarte Senior Center in Duarte, Calif. Williams gave a talk titled Using Medication Wisely. STEVEN T. VALENTINE MPA received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the USC Health Services Administration Alumni Association. He has served the USC Health Program as student president, alumni president, admissions committee member and advisory board member. ALAN D. WAPNER was recently re-elected to the city council of Ontario, Calif. He is presently Ontarios mayor pro tem and has served on its city council since 1994. Wapner has a JD degree from Whittier College School of Law. GEORGE YASUTAKE PharmD was quoted in a November 1998 article, Consumers Unaware of Legal Drug Risks, that appeared in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. JOE CURTIS accepted the position of regional sales director at DHL Worldwide Express, where he has worked for the past eight years. He lives in Hermosa Beach, Calif., with his wife, Deborah, and their four children. ARMOND A. DINVERNO was chosen by Worth magazine as one of the top 300 financial advisers in the United States for 1998, the second consecutive year he has been so honored. Dinverno is president of Dinverno & Foltz Financial Group, based in Oak Brook, Ill.. TIM DANG received an Ovation Award from Theatre LA, the citys largest association of theater companies. He is the artistic director for East West Players, a 33-year-old theater company dedicated to developing writers and roles for Asian Pacific Americans. He won the award for his direction of the play Pacific Overtures. Dang is an active member of USCs Asian Pacific American Support Group. DEAN HALLETT has been promoted to senior vice president of planning and control at Walt Disney Studios, where he has worked since 1990. CARL C. KREHBIEL MA, PhD 87, was elected to the Kansas Legislature, representing the 74th District in the states House of Representatives. CLEMENT REID MM has been named 1999 Washington State Commissioned Composer of the Year by the Music Teachers National Association. A new work by Reid will premiere at the associations state convention in June. His Short Stories for guitar and piano was performed on an MTNA benefit concert, which aired on the Live by George program with George Shangrow of Classic KING-FM, Seattle. GEORGE HAROLD WAXTER graduated with an MD degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He is enrolled in a three-year residency program in internal medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Robert Wood Johnson, in New Brunswick. To celebrate his 40th birthday, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. TIMOTHY P. WHALEN MA 86 was appointed director of the Getty Con-servation Institute in Los Angeles. The institute works collaboratively with other cultural organizations to develop new methods and innovative strategies for conserving the worlds artistic and cultural heritage. Whalen has been in charge of conservation grant-making activities for the Getty Grant Program since 1991, and has been with the Getty since 1981.
