LUCERNE (SASINE) HAMER and ROBERT CLARENCE HAMER ’49 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Jan. 22, 1999. The couple met on campus following Bob’s World War II service in the U.S. Navy; Lucerne was affiliated with Gamma Phi Beta and Bob belonged to Delta Sigma Phi. Bob worked in the mortgage banking business until 1984, when the couple retired to Carpinteria, Calif.
JACK DeBAR SMITH is the author of The Iconoclast Goes to Sea: Dilemma in Blues (Dorrance Publishing Co. Inc.), a wry and colorful look at life in the U.S. Navy at the commencement of World War II. Following his naval service, Smith owned his own insurance agency for 30 years and is now retired in Van Nuys, Calif., with his wife, Janet.

BILL LONG co-hosted a banquet on campus Jan. 19 for alumni of the Beta Sigma chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order who were initiated between 1947 and 1957. More than 70 alumni attended the event, co-hosted by BERNARD PIPKIN ’53, MA ’56, professor of geology at USC.
CURLEE ROSS MD ’57 recently spent two weeks in Khabarovsk, Russia, as a business consultant to a family-medicine clinic. Ross’ work was part of a concerted effort to train a large number of Russian physicians in the family-medicine specialty.

Author THEODORE ROOSEVELT GARDNER II has received national critical acclaim for his new novel, Give Gravity a Chance: A Love Story (Knoll Publishers). Gardner, who has written numerous books, lives in Santa Barbara, Calif., with his wife, Virginia MS ’73. His daughter, Julia ’89, is also an alumna.

JACK CASEY returned to Zuma Corp., a Culver City, Calif.-based digital image conversion service bureau and sales organization, as vice president of sales and marketing. He was previously with Zuma from 1987 to 1989. Since then, Casey worked for several leading companies in the industry. While a student at USC, he was president of the Trojan Knights, chairman of Troy Camp, elected Mr. Trojanality and named Outstanding Men’s Organization President for 1956. Casey is currently a member of the Out-a-Bounders’ Board of Directors and past president of the Trojan Club Board of Directors. He and his wife, Ginger ’57, live in Santa Ana, Calif.
PAYNE B. JOHNSON was named guest curator for his exhibition, Path to the Lost Cities: In the Footsteps of the Maya Explorers, on display through May 16, 1999, at the San Diego Museum of Man. The exhibit is based on Johnson’s retracing of the 1839-1842 expedition that led to the discovery of the Maya civilization.

LAWRENCE REED MOLINE was inducted as a Fellow in the American Society of Landscape Architects in recognition of his professional excellence. His firm, LRM Ltd., in Culver City, Calif., celebrated its 30th anniversary in July. Moline is a member of the USC Architectural Guild and has served as a member of its board of directors.

DAVID B. WAKE MS, PhD ’64, professor of integrative biology and former director of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at UC Berkeley, is the third recipient of the Joseph Grinnell Medal in honor of the museum’s first director. Wake held the directorship for more than 27 years.

Connie Phillips, a New York book editor, is a captive of her own sexuality but is ignorant of what her heart truly desires. Psychologist Margaret Stern long ago cast her lot with her intellect and is now a prisoner of that decision. They meet as patient and psychologist.”

BILL ALTAFFER MS ’70 of Mammoth, Calif., received a 30-year pin from the Professional Ski Instructors of America for dedicated and outstanding service to the ski industry as a ski instructor. Altaffer received the only 30-year pin awarded in California.
WENDELL HOLLOWAY MA, MPA ’73, PhD ’75, has been appointed interim president of Bowie State University in Adelphi, Md. He is taking a leave from his post on the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland, which oversees Bowie State and 10 other public institutions. Holloway helped organize and support USC’s Washington Public Affairs Center in its start-up years, 1973-75.

RONALD J. BLACK, a 23-year resident of Glendale, Calif., has been appointed by that city’s mayor and city council to the Building and Fire Board of Appeals. Black is a senior investigator for the City of Los Angeles, Department of Building and Safety.

HEINRICH RICHARD (DICK) FALK PhD, a professor of theater at Cal State Northridge, recently delivered two lectures on contemporary Latin American theater and playwrightsat the Shanghai Theatre Academy. To illustrate his lectures, Falk used videotaped performances of several Latin American plays he directed at the academy as a guest director and lecturer in 1993.

MADALYNNE S. LEWIS PhD led seminars in Prague, Czech Republic, on the historical development of modern dance in America. As an independent scholar, she has visited both the Czech Republic and Estonia to reinforce interest in dance.

JOE GETHERALL MPA ’77, a retired U.S. Marine and Purple Heart recipient who served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a team leader with the “Elite 3rd” Force Reconnaissance Company, was the featured speaker at the City of Commerce Veteran’s Day Ceremony. Getherall is a retired LAPD detective who now works as a private investigator.
GENE POKORNY has been principal tuba of the Chicago Symphony for the past 10 years. In addition to performing and teaching, he wrote a chapter on orchestral auditions for The Tuba Source Book, published in 1996 by Indiana University Press. Pokorny and his wife, Beth, live in Oak Park, Ill.

JOHN NABER compiled and edited Awaken the Olympian Within: Stories from America’s Greatest Olympic Motivators (Griffin Publishing), a collection of inspirational essays from 29 Olympians. Naber won four gold medals in swimming at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and has been a commentator and host on ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” and on ESPN. He is also a motivational speaker and president of Naber & Associates Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in sports-related marketing.
BRADLEY R. WILLIAMS PharmD, associate dean of external affairs, associate professor of clinical pharmacy and gerontology, USC schools of Pharmacy and Gerontology, participated in a discussion series on what it means to grow older in America, held at the Duarte Senior Center in Duarte, Calif. Williams gave a talk titled “Using Medication Wisely.”

CARLO CUDIO has been appointed deputy chief of the Los Angeles Police Department and assigned as the commanding officer of operations, South Bureau. He is responsible for all of LAPD’s patrol, traffic and detective resources in the southern part of the city, including the area surrounding USC’s University Park Campus.Cudio is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
TIM DANG received an Ovation Award from Theatre LA, the city’s largest association of theater companies. He is the artistic director for East West Players, a 33-year-old theater company dedicated to developing writers and roles for Asian Pacific Americans. He won the award for his direction of the play Pacific Overtures. Dang is an active member of USC’s Asian Pacific American Support Group.
DEAN HALLETT has been promoted to senior vice president of planning and control at Walt Disney Studios, where he has worked since 1990.
CARL C. KREHBIEL MA, PhD ’87, was elected to the Kansas Legislature, representing the 74th District in the state’s House of Representatives.
CLEMENT REID MM has been named 1999 Washington State Commissioned Composer of the Year by the Music Teachers National Association. A new work by Reid will premiere at the association’s state convention in June. His “Short Stories” for guitar and piano was performed on an MTNA benefit concert, which aired on the “Live by George” program with George Shangrow of Classic KING-FM, Seattle.
GEORGE HAROLD WAXTER graduated with an MD degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He is enrolled in a three-year residency program in internal medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey — Robert Wood Johnson, in New Brunswick. To celebrate his 40th birthday, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
TIMOTHY P. WHALEN MA ’86 was appointed director of the Getty Con-servation Institute in Los Angeles. The institute works collaboratively with other cultural organizations to develop new methods and innovative strategies for conserving the world’s artistic and cultural heritage. Whalen has been in charge of conservation grant-making activities for the Getty Grant Program since 1991, and has been with the Getty since 1981.
