As both transportation researcher and director of Metrans -- a university transportation center funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the California Department of Transportation -- Genevieve Giuliano has provided insights and published studies on public transit, travel patterns of the elderly, urban transportation and low-income commuters.
From her extensive research on how people travel, transportation expert Genevieve Giuliano debunks popular theories on highway congestion and mixed-use development.
Her recent research tracking travelers in the United States and Europe, for example, found that creating more high-density mixed-use development would not necessarily ease road congestion. Use of automobiles has more to do with income than with residential location, she says.
