USC Student-Athletes Show Their Creativity in the Sixth Annual Louis

WHAT: The USC Roski School of Fine Arts and the USC Athletics Department are pleased to present the Sixth Annual Louis Galen Artletics Exhibition, a showcase of artwork made by USC intercollegiate student-athletes in studio-art courses. The collaborative exhibition highlights the artistic talents of Trojan student-athletes through works in painting, drawing, ceramics, design, printmaking, and photography.
"The Roski School is pleased to collaborate closely with the Athletics Department to showcase the creative talents of student-athletes," said Rochelle Steiner, Dean of the USC Roski School of Fine Arts. "We are lucky to share a dedicated patron of both the arts and athletics in Helene Galen and her late husband Lou."
"Artletics is a wonderful testament to the well-roundedness of our student-athletes," said Pat Haden, USC's Athletic Director. "USC is committed to supporting athletes' academic endeavors, and we are pleased that so many express their vibrant creativity in Fine Arts classes."
WHO: Among the artists featured are members of USC's football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, tennis, rowing, track and field, soccer, and water polo teams. The exhibiting athletes are:
Iskra Angelova (women's rowing) Emily Miller (women's soccer)
Kaitlyn Christian (women's tennis) Mitch Mustain (football)
Courtney Clayton (track and field) Bryshon Nellum (track and field)
Jeremy Davie (men's water polo) Kajsa Olsson (women's rowing)
Andrew Hayes (men's water polo) Matt Sagehorn (men's water polo)
Dina Hegazy (women's swimming) Yumi So (women's swimming)
Georgette Hernandez (women's water polo) William Thompson (track and field)
Samantha Hirschmann (women's volleyball) Murphy Troy (men's volleyball)
Kara-Leigh Huse (women's water polo) Gregory Woodburn (track and field)
Garrett Jackson (men's basketball) Kendall Wootten (women's water polo)
Among the athletic accomplishments of these student-athlete artists: Hegazy set a since-broken school record in the 200-yard backstroke, Nellum was the 2007 Gatorade High School National Track Athlete of the Year, Murphy was an All-American starting outside hitter on USC's 2009 NCAA runner-up men's volleyball squad, Thompson ranks second on USC's all-time javelin throw chart and placed second at the 2010 Pac-10 meet, So was a 2010 All-American honorable mention pick, Angelova was a member of the Bulgarian national team, Olsson was on the Swedish junior national team and Christian is USC's top freshman tennis player who just won the doubles title at the Freeman Memorial tourney. Sagehorn was a member of USC's 2008 and 2009 NCAA championship men's water polo teams, while Davie and Hayes were on the 2010 NCAA titlist men's water polo team and Huse and Wootten were on the women's water polo squad that won the 2010 NCAA crown. Mustain was the backup quarterback on the Trojan football team, Hirschmann was a member of the Women of Troy's 2010 NCAA Final Four squad, Miller was the backup goalkeeper on the women's soccer team that advanced to the second round of the 2010 NCAAs tourney and Jackson is an often-used freshman forward on the men's basketball team.
Karen Koblitz, Head of Ceramics at the Roski School and organizer of Artletics, pointed out the close relationship between art and sport: "Roski School of Fine Arts courses require focus, commitment, dedication, and a certain amount of physicality—exactly the qualities required of athletes as they pursue excellence in their sports."
HOW: The Louis Galen Artletics Exhibition is named in honor of USC alumnus Louis Galen, who graduated from the USC Gould School of Law in 1951 and passed away in 2007. Galen was a strong supporter of the USC Athletics Department and, along with his wife Helene, endowed the Galen Ceramics Studio, the Galen Ceramics Lecture Series, and the Helene V. Galen Intermedia Lab at the USC Roski School of Fine Arts.
