Beyond Grades and Test Scores: What Matters in College Admissions?

WHAT: Nearly 200 college admission deans, higher education scholars, state and federal policymakers and school leaders will gather to examine the attributes of a successful college student and how these traits could be considered in college admissions policies.
Research shows the attributes of a successful student go well beyond stellar test scores and top-notch grades – the abilities to adapt, persist, lead, be creative, handle disappointment and negotiate complex systems often make the difference between a student who is engaged and successful on campus or one who is not.
Conference topics will include:
• Understanding What Makes Good Students and Good Professionals
• Legal and Educational Implications of Considerations of Race in College Admission
• Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin Case Study: Reactions, Opposing Views, and Implications for Practice
• Rewarding Character and Achievement with Scholarships
• Attributes for Successful Community College Transfer Students
The USC Center for Enrollment Research, Policy, and Practice hosts the annual conference. Executive Director Jerome A. Lucido has played a leading role at the national level in initiatives to improve college and university access for low-income and underrepresented students and to design and execute effective and principled college admission and enrollment management practices. Lucido previously held senior enrollment positions at USC, the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the University of Arizona.

About the USC Center for Enrollment Research, Policy, and Practice: The Center for Enrollment Research, Policy, and Practice (CERPP) at the University of Southern California analyzes enrollment issues through the critical perspectives of social science researchers, policymakers, and college and university practitioners.
