Source Alert: USC Experts available to speak about this year's Oscar nominations, Golden Globes

January 9, 2013

Available to discuss the entertainment industry, violence and minorities in media

Mary Murphy is an expert on celebrity and the Hollywood industry at the USC Annneberg School. Her expertise and story ideas range from the industry of Hollywood’s awards season (a rush for plastic surgery, advertising campaigns, competition for designers) to the strategy studios use to promote films and what the picks say about popular culture. “The next few weeks are a nonstop pageant leading up to the Oscars,” Murphy says.

Stacy Smith is an expert on women in media at the USC Annenberg School. Her expertise also includes childrens' responses to violence in media. Her most recent study explored the kinds of jobs women are portrayed as holding in TV and in film, finding they are still often shown in stereotypical roles. As a speaker at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Smith will release a new study exploring how women are faring in independent films.

Todd Boyd is an expert on race, media and hip-hop culture. He can comment on portrayals of race in films like Django Unchained and Lincoln. Boyd recently reviewed Django Unchained: "Django's mind may be immersed in the Spaghetti Westerns of Corbucci or the choreographed mayhem of a Sam Peckinpah, for example, but the film's heart remains in Blaxploitation."
