Sean Patrick Nordt, M.D., is an assistant professor in clinical emergency medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and director of the section of toxicology. He is an expert in poison control and drug and alcohol abuse. He can address the adverse health effects of energy drink consumption. "Energy drinks contain various substances and can have as much caffeine as two to six cups of coffee per can," said Nordt. "Consuming caffeine in high doses can have serious side effects including abnormal heart rhythms, seizures and death. These effects can be increased by co-ingesting similar stimulants." John Lipham, M.D., is an associate professor of surgery and chief of the division of upper GI and general surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.
