SOURCE ALERT: USC experts available to comment on energy drink consumption and heartburn management

January 22, 2013

Energy Drink Consumption
Sean Patrick Nordt, M.D., is an assistant professor in clinical emergency medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and director of the section of toxicology. He is an expert in poison control and drug and alcohol abuse. He can address the adverse health effects of energy drink consumption. "Energy drinks contain various substances and can have as much caffeine as two to six cups of coffee per can," said Nordt. "Consuming caffeine in high doses can have serious side effects including abnormal heart rhythms, seizures and death. These effects can be increased by co-ingesting similar stimulants." Contact him at (213) 717-0067, pager; (323) 226-6667, office; or nordt@usc.edu.

Heartburn Management
John Lipham, M.D., is an associate professor of surgery and chief of the division of upper GI and general surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. His areas of expertise include gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric cancer and chronic heartburn management. He can discuss the symptoms of chronic reflux disease as well as options for treatment. "For millions of Americans who suffer from chronic reflux disease, one of life's normally most pleasurable experiences -- enjoying a meal -- can instead become a daily chore they anticipate with dread," said Lipham. "Chronic reflux can cause severe discomfort, robbing people of their sleep. However, treatment options like the LINX Reflux Management System have literally transformed the lives of patients with chronic reflux disease." He can be contacted through the USC Health Sciences Public Relations & Marketing Office at (323) 442-3941 or alison.trinidad@usc.edu.
