February 25, 2013
The Keck Medical
Center of USC is the official medical team for the 2013 ASICS LA
Marathon, which is scheduled to occur on Sunday, March 17. This source
alert includes a list of experts who can address preparation and
recovery tips for marathon participants. They can be contacted through
USC Health Sciences Public Relations & Marketing Office.
Cold and Flu Recovery
Sharon Orrange, M.D., is an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Her areas of expertise include primary care and internal medicine. She can provide advice for runners recovering from a cold or flu. "Runners may want to hold off on some of the over-the-counter cold and flu medications near race day," said Orrange. "Medications like Sudafed can raise blood pressure and cause jitters and Claritin, Allegra and Zyrtec may cause a dry mouth."
Foot Injury
Timothy P. Charlton, M.D., is an assistant professor of clinical orthopaedics at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. An expert in foot and ankle surgery, he can recommend prevention tips for potential injuries during marathon training. "Runners who feel tenderness inside of their ankle may be experiencing overpronation, which is caused from excessive rolling or flattening of the foot," said Charlton. "The key is correcting the alignment of the foot. Control running shoes and soft athletic orthotic inserts can help solve this problem."
Nutrition
Carol Koprowski, Ph.D., R.D., is a clinical assistant professor of preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. She is an expert in nutrition, diet and weight loss. She can suggest nutrition tips for runners pre- and post-marathon. "Carbohydrates are the preferred fuel for the body," said Koprowski. "During training, focus on foods high in carbohydrates and low in fat, fiber and protein such as fruit or pasta."
Running Apparel
Glenn T. Ault, M.D., is associate dean at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and medical director for the 2013 Asics LA Marathon. His areas of expertise include clinical administration and inflammatory bowel disease. He can offer tips for running apparel in cold or wet weather. "Runners should consider wearing shirts made of 'technical' fabric that wicks away moisture from the body," said Ault. "If the weather is cold, consider wearing a cap or jacket made of breathable fabric."
