One appointed member is selected each year to add balance to the EDUCAUSE board of directors from a variety of I.T. sectors critical for advancing higher education.
Campbell will assume his four-year term on Jan. 1, 2006. He has been a member of the association’s recognition committee since 2002.
“I’ve always found EDUCAUSE to be one of the most actively engaged associations in matters that are meaningful to its constituencies,” Campbell said. “It is also one of the most successful associations at influencing the national agenda in ways that are significant and positive for higher education. I look forward to being part of the governance of the organization.”
Campbell serves as a commissioner with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Center for Telecommunications Management and treasurer of the InCommon Federation. In addition, he is a member of the American Library Association.
In the early 1990s, Campbell was on the board of directors and served as president of the Association of Research Libraries. His appointment to EDUCAUSE puts him in the unique position of having served on the board of directors of the top two associations for libraries and computing in higher education.
“Jerry Campbell brings a wealth of knowledge, expertise and perspective to the EDUCAUSE board, including firsthand knowledge of the increasing intersection between the worlds of librarianship and I.T.,” said Brian L. Hawkins, president of EDUCAUSE. “Jerry is an outstanding member of the community, and his contributions to the Scholars Portal effort and other initiatives gives the board a unique set of viewpoints.”
Campbell was appointed dean, university librarian and chief information officer at USC in January 1996.
As CIO and dean, Campbell advises the university on an array of issues related to USC’s information infrastructure and is responsible for the administration of the university’s Information Services Division, which includes the departments of academic computing and telecommunication services and the libraries.
He also chairs the university’s Information Council and serves on the university’s Facilities Improvement Committee.
Prior to USC, Campbell served for more than a decade as vice provost for library affairs and vice provost for computing at Duke University.
EDUCAUSE’s 15,000 active members are drawn from more than 1,900 colleges, universities and educational organizations, including 200 corporations. More information about the organization can be found at http://www.educause.edu.
