[Last Word] Olympic Originals - Answers - Summer 2008
In the annals of Last Word whoppers, clue No. 6 is surely one for the record books. Many of our puzzlers rapped us on the knuckles for this one. Two-time discus champ Lillian Copeland did not, as we wrongly averred, “have the pleasure of personally disproving Adolf Hitler’s theories concerning the superiority of the Aryan race” in 1936. She won gold in Los Angeles in 1932, but boycotted the Berlin games – as did many other Jewish-American athletes. Louise Sanematsu ‘82 points to a handy Web resource (www.jewishsports.net/biopages/LillianCopeland.htm) for more on Copeland. Meanwhile, USC Sports Information director Tim Tessalone notes Troy boasts not 41 Olympic gold medalists, as the wording in clue No. 3 would suggest. Rather, it boasts 41 gold medals, captured by 31 Trojans. Of the 44 entries, 23 were flawless. Five Borders gift certificates go out to randomly selected winners: Bill Garner ’73 , Mark Saunders ’75, Autumn Allison ’78, Monica Capalia PharmD ’86 and Vineet Verma MS ’00. Answers ›› 1.
