It probably wasn’t the cold, since it was mid-October in 1960 when then-vice president Richard Milhous Nixon spoke to students on the steps of Doheny Memorial Library. But Nixon clenched his fists to make a point as he spoke to a first-time voter convocation on campus. (His opponent, and victor, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, spoke the following month on the same steps.) Then, as in the presidential campaign this year, there was a robust effort to enlist new voters on college campuses.
