And the 2009 Alumni Awards Go to …
Named for the 1931-32 president of the USC Alumni Association, the award “recognizes alumni who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the university and the community by giving generously of their time, energy and leadership.” Chan is chairman of the Hang Lung Group Limited in Hong Kong.
Of the selection, USC President Steven B. Sample said, “The university, and I personally, rely on Ronnie Chan’s guidance in so many ways, but especially as we build USC’s reach and presence around the Pacific Rim. He is an energetic, forward-looking trustee who more than deserves this recognition reserved for illustrious alumni.”
Chan became chairman of the Hang Lung Group Limited, one of Hong Kong and mainland China’s most established property developers, in 1991.
He also chairs the group’s major subsidiary, Hang Lung Properties Limited, and serves as vice chairman of the board of Asia Society, the nonpartisan, nonprofit global organization building relationships among the leaders, institutions and people of the United States and Asia.
In addition to Chan, the Alumni Association will recognize seven other distinguished alumni for their achievements and contributions. Mark A. Stevens ’81, MS ’84, managing partner of Sequoia Capital, and U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Frances C. Wilson EdD ’80, will receive Alumni Merit Awards.
David M. Breslow PharmD ’71, CEO of United Pharmacists Network Inc.; Alexander L. Cappello ’77, chairman and CEO of Cappello Group Inc.; and James A. Eddy ’52 and Janet Ewart Eddy ’54, MS ’78, PhD ’91, of the Half-Century Trojans will receive Alumni Service Awards.
Ron Orr ’79, associate athletic director of USC Athletics, will receive the Fred B. Olds Award.
“Through their many accomplishments and acts of service, these eight alumni have proven themselves to be exemplary members of the Trojan Family,” said Scott Mory, associate senior vice president for alumni relations.
Every year since 1932, the USC Alumni Association has paid tribute to distinguished members of the Trojan Family. The annual Alumni Awards Gala is the premier event sponsored by the alumni association. All proceeds from the event support the association’s programs, services and scholarships.
Past recipients of the Asa V. Call Achievement Award include Grammy-winning trumpeter Herb Alpert, former Secretary of State Warren M. Christopher and legendary screen star John Wayne.
