USC enrolled its largest-ever number of international students last fall – boosted by a 19 percent jump in students from mainland China – according to the annual Open Doors report issued by the Institute of International Education.

USC leads among U.S. institutions for the seventh year in a row, with 7,189 international students in the 2007-08 academic year, according to the institute. New York University is in second place and Columbia University ranks third in the report.

Indian students compose the largest segment of USC’s international population, at 1,571. Students from mainland China are second, with 1,015. Both numbers represent record enrollments from each country.

USC officials attributed the jump in Chinese students to several factors, including its reputation along the Pacific Rim and a commitment to recruiting supported by an expanding alumni base in several Chinese cities.

“USC is the top American university for international students by design, not by accident,” said C. L. Max Nikias, executive vice president and university provost. “Over the years, we have been strategically expanding our international presence in major cities around the world. As a result, our students are better prepared to compete in an increasingly global society.”

Nearly 73 percent of USC’s international students last year were enrolled in graduate-level programs, with the greatest number attending the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.

“International students from 115 different countries bring a wealth of experiences and viewpoints to our campus,” said Tony Tambascia, assistant dean of student affairs. “This contributes to a dynamic learning environment unparalleled at any other American university.”
