| December 2008 marked the 55th anniversary of the closing of University Avenue to through traffic. Later renamed Trousdale Parkway (in honor of former USC trustee Paul Trousdale, who led a campaign for campus beautification), the avenue saw daily traffic jams after World War II when veterans taking advantage of the GI Bill thronged the campus. The “GI Bulge” reached its peak in 1947-48, with 24,000 day and evening students, most of them former servicemen. Today, there are still daily traffic jams as pedestrians dodge bicycles, skateboards and scooters. |
