USC Department of Public Safety Officer Daniel Hect was presented with a Community Service Award by the City of Los Angeles, East District, Department of Recreation and Parks last Saturday, Nov. 8. In the presentation at Castillo Park, Hect, a black belt in USA goju karate, was recognized for teaching a six-week "Keep Me Safe" course in self-defense last summer to community youth at the gymnasium in nearby Hazard Park. Hect volunteered for the summer camp as part of the USC Dept. of Public Safety's COPPS (Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving) program.
Ronald E. Smith, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, has been named as the first recipient of the Gold Medal of the International Uveitis Study Group.The selection was made during the group's annual meeting in Japan, and will be formally awarded in Paris next year. The award recognizes Smith's contributions to the field of ocular inflammation and uveitis.
Smith also recently delivered the 60th George de Schweinitz Memorial Lecture in Pennsylvania-one of the most prestigious lectureships in the U.S.
