USC Annenberg Establishes Chick Hearn Scholarship Fund

The L.A. icon represented the best in sports broadcasting. The USC Annenberg scholarship, seeded by the Lakers and the Hearn family, will support deserving journalism students.

Broadcasting legend Chick Hearn spent 40 years with the Lakers and six seasons (1956-61) announcing for USC Trojan football and basketball games.

The USC Annenberg School for Communication has established a scholarship fund in honor of Chick Hearn, the legendary Los Angeles Lakers announcer who died Monday, Aug. 5.

The Hearn family and the Los Angeles Lakers have asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory be made to the USC Annenberg Chick Hearn Fund.

"Chick Hearn was an icon who represented the best in sports, broadcasting, and the spirit of Los Angeles," said Geoffrey Cowan, dean of the USC Annenberg School for Communication. "We are honored that the Hearn family and the Lakers have chosen to support deserving USC Annenberg journalism students who will build upon his great tradition."

"Good journalism helps create a sense of community, and no one in broadcasting did that better than Chick Hearn," added Michael Parks, director of USC Annenberg’s School of Journalism and former editor of the Los Angeles Times.

In addition to his more than 40 years with the Lakers, Hearn spent several seasons (1956-61) as the announcer for USC Trojan football and basketball games.
