The division of cardiology and the Office of Continuing Medical Education hosted the largest heart failure symposium in the nation on Jan. 11.

Held at the Biltmore Hotel, the event attracted 400 physicians who attended a daylong program on advances in diagnosis and treatment. The symposium included presentations by Uri Elkayam, professor of medicine and director of the Keck School’s Heart Failure Program, Gerald Pohost, professor of medicine and chief of cardiovascular medicine, and Glenn Ehresmann, associate professor of clinical medicine.

With noted speakers from as far as South Africa, the annual event was designed to provide the latest information on novel therapies and offer presentations of research that has not yet been published, Elkayam said.

"We always have a group of excellent speakers who are nationally and internationally known. USC has a strong reputation in terms of heart failure and we’ve been involved almost without exception in every new and important study in the investigation of new therapies for it," he said.

Noting that attendance jumps an average of 10 to 15 percent annually, Elkayam said, "It’s a very successful meeting each year. That’s why we keep doing it."
