ANTON BURG AND HIS NOBEL-WINNING ADMIRERS
[Photo:] At the Oct. 14 birthday party in his honor, 90-year-old chemist
Anton Burg was feted by more than 100 USC colleagues, former students
and scientific collaborators.
Here, he is flanked by two Nobel laureates - USC's George A. Olah, left,
and Harvard University's William N. Lipscomb, who had flown in for the
celebration.
On the display behind them, to Burg's right, is a photo of him taken 40
years ago.
Burg came to USC in 1939 and systematically built a world-class physical
science presence. He is credited with major discoveries in the chemistry
of the element boron.
