Evening Standard (U.K.) featured the USC Shoah Foundation Institute
for Visual History and Education, which has made 52,000 video
testimonies by Holocaust survivors available to the University of
London. The collection will be accessible to academics, students and
the public. "Royal Holloway, University of London, has positioned
itself to become a global leader in testimony-based research now that
this resource is available to British scholars," said Stephen Smith,
executive director of the institute. The story noted that filmmaker
Steven Spielberg started the institute in 1994 after making
"Schindler's List."
United Press International featured research by Katrina Edwards and Jason Sylvan of the USC Dornsife College, finding that marine life persists even after the hydrothermal sea vents it is based around go dormant. Edwards and her team found that when the vents die, microbes that fed on a vent's gases are supplanted by ones that feed on the iron and sulphur in the vents themselves. "Hydrothermal vents are really ephemeral in nature," Edwards said. Asian News International also featured the research.
Business Insider ran an op-ed by Ira Kalb of the USC Marshall School about the economic value of the Oscars. Kalb wrote that the Academy Award is a valuable marketing tool, keeping movies in theaters longer, and boosting box office receipts, DVD sales, downloads and cable TV revenues.
