Los
Angeles Times
ran an op-ed by Patrice Rushen of the USC Thornton School about the
influence of the popular TV show "Soul Train," created by the late Don
Cornelius. Rushen recounted being on a few episodes of the show as a
dancer, then later visiting the show as a guest when her musical career
took off. "If you were on 'Soul Train,' it could make the difference
between a few thousand people hearing you on the radio to millions
seeing you at one time," Rushen wrote.
CBS News' "MoneyWatch" ran an op-ed by Dave Logan of the USC Marshall School about Mitt Romney's image when it comes to leadership. "I'm a fan of his … and only wish he'd act like who he really is: a smart man who is deeply confident in his abilities, his faith, and his success in life," Logan wrote. "Unfortunately, he also comes across as believing that if he speaks his mind, he'll lose the election. So he's hired coaches who stage every gesture, wardrobe choice, and half-curved smile." The column cited "On Becoming a Leader" by Warren Bennis of the Marshall School.
KPCC-FM featured a report by Jenny Schuetz of the USC Price School that analyzed the availability of retail services in 58 large U.S. metro areas. While the study found that many poor urban neighborhoods have high concentrations of grocery stores, these neighborhoods often lacked the larger chain establishments that often provide lower prices and a larger selection. "It's not a matter of how many there are -- there are lots of small 'mom-and-pop' stores but not many larger chain stores or supermarkets," Shuetz wrote in the report.
The Washington Post quoted Jeffrey Cole of the USC Annenberg School about how face-to-face social manners have changed with the advent of smart phones and laptops.
Los Angeles Times quoted Todd Boyd of the USC School of Cinematic Arts on the death of Don Cornelius, creator of "Soul Train," and the show's status a cultural breakthrough.
Fox Business quoted Jerome Lucido of the USC Rossier School about an overemphasis on SAT scores in public perception of the college admissions process.
Bloomberg Businessweek quoted David Carter of the USC Marshall School about the competition between potential owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Bloomberg News quoted Richard Green of the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate about the difficulty of the home refinancing process.
Las Vegas Review-Journal quoted Gary Painter of the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate about people waiting for the housing market to improve.
The Fiscal Times cited an op-ed by Ira Kalb of the USC Marshall School on what Google needs to do to calm its angry customers.
The San Diego Union-Tribune mentioned that USC's $6 billion fundraising campaign is the largest in higher education history.
Yahoo! News ran an op-ed by Susan Estrich of the USC Gould School listing 10 reasons why Newt Gingrich shouldn't drop out of the presidential race.
CBS News Dayton, Ohio, affiliate WHIO-TV mentioned that the USC Rossier School has a highly regarded online master's program.
