USC in the News 2/4 to 2/6/2012
The
Chronicle of Philanthropy quoted Albert Checcio, senior vice
president for university advancement, about the factors that motivate
donors to give to a particular institution or cause. The story noted
that USC received multiple nine-figure gifts last year toward its $6
billion fundraising campaign.
CNN ran an op-ed by Antonio Damasio of the USC Dornsife College about the nature of consciousness. Damasio compared the human mind to a Boeing 747, noting that both respond to changes in their environment, mapping out changes within themselves as well. However, the human mind is imbued with a sense of self. "I believe to be conscious of our perceptions is to have ongoing representations of streams of events that affect our bodies, cause feelings, and become felt representations," Damasio wrote.
The Huffington Post ran an op-ed by Philip Seib of the USC Annenberg School about America's need for intellectual diplomacy that will contain China as the two nations face off in a cultural war. Seib wrote that while the U.S. is already moving military into the Pacific region, there's a need for soft power similar to that employed against the Soviet Union. "To a certain extent, American culture can connect with publics that otherwise would be untouched by U.S. foreign policy initiatives," he wrote.
C-SPAN covered a panel discussion attended by Martin Kaplan of the USC Annenberg School on history and journalism. It was the result of a partnership among several groups, including Annenberg's Norman Lear Center, of which Kaplan is founding director; and USC's Center on Communication Leadership and Policy. The discussion focused on the life of publisher Henry Luce and how journalism can shape history.
PBS News' "Charlie Rose" interviewed David Agus of the Keck School of USC about his new book, "The End of Illness." Agus said that inflammation plays a large part in causing illness, and healing it can require solutions such as walking more during the day, wearing comfortable shoes and taking meals at the same time every day.
