USC in the News 2/7/2012
Los
Angeles Times featured the Oscar Senti-meter, an interactive tool
developed by the USC Annenberg School's Annenberg Innovation Lab, the
Los Angeles Times and IBM. The tool sifts through millions of tweets to
analyze opinions about the Academy Awards race; it identifies positive
and negative sentiments toward the Twitter subjects using language
recognition technology developed in collaboration with the USC Viterbi
School's Signal Analysis and Interpretation Lab. Los Angeles Times
ran a second story on the project. La
Opinion featured Senti-meter results finding that on the night of
the Oscar nominations Mexican actor Demian Bichir earned the most
Tweets of all male actors. El
Universal (Mexico) and Quien
(Mexico) also ran stories.
Los Angeles Times highlighted the upcoming USC Conference on Sports: The Olympics, presented by the USC Annenberg School's USC Annenberg Institute of Sports, Media and Society. The conference will feature Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, gold medalist Allyson Felix and announcers Jim Nantz and Jim Lampley.

The Times-Picayune ran an op-ed by Rebecca Brown of the USC Gould School about the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court challenge to the Affordable Care Act. Brown wrote that opposition to the individual mandate is not about federalism. The act is about regulating commerce, Brown wrote, which the Constitution explicitly gives Congress the power to do. Brown added that real objection is about individual rights: "The challenge could have been framed openly in rights terms but would not prevail: The right to privacy has never been extended to economic purchasing decisions."
KPCC-FM highlighted research by Jody Agius Vallejo of the USC Dornsife College and Dowell Myers of the USC Price School about the development of a Latino middle class. Vallejo wrote about upwardly mobile Latinos, noting that many have grown up in poor or disadvantaged communities and retain links to those communities. Among families that are economically secure, legal status allows parents to obtain well paid jobs and have more resources to invest in education. Myers' research shows an increase in Latino and Asian American homeownership, just as aging white Californian homeowners are looking to sell their real estate.
The Press-Enterprise featured a hippotherapy ranch created with help from Cassandra Sanders-Holly of the USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy. Sanders-Holly is a physical therapist and lives in Norco, where the ranch is located. Each week the equine facility treats about 20 children who have neuromuscular or musculoskeletal conditions. "The biomechanics of a horse's pelvis mimics a person's exactly," Sanders-Holly said. "So for a child who can't walk on his own, he's able to experience what walking should be."
TheStreet featured a research project by the USC Annenberg School and IBM that analyzed tweets about Tom Brady and Eli Manning to measure how Twitter users felt toward the two quarterbacks. The researchers found that Manning is set to overtake Brady in terms of popularity, with Manning earning a 66 percent sentiment score versus Brady's 61 percent. Poughkeepsie Journal highlighted the research.
