USC in the News 2/11 to 2/13/2012


Los Angeles Times featured a Grammy Museum exhibition co-curated by Josh Kun of the USC Annenberg School. Kun helped put together "Trouble in Paradise: Music and Los Angeles, 1945-1976," which examines how changes in the city's population and economy collided with its music scenes. "I want people to come away learning about all the different communities and layers of music in L.A.," Kun said.

Los Angeles Times featured the Oscar Senti-meter, an online tool developed by the USC Annenberg School's Innovation Lab, the L.A. Times and IBM to analyze messages on Twitter. The tool uses language-recognition technology developed in collaboration with USC Viterbi School's Signal Analysis and Interpretation Lab.

Financial Times (U.K.) highlighted research from the USC Annenberg Innovation Lab, noting that it studies "sentiment analysis," teaching computers to read emotions. "It's a huge and constant learning process, and for students is exciting," said Jonathan Taplin of the USC Annenberg School.

BBC Radio (U.K.) featured research by Valter Longo of the USC Davis School finding that short periods of fasting could help cancer patients better tolerate chemotherapy, and may even make treatment more effective.

The Wall Street Journal, in an Associated Press story, quoted Rob Landel of the USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy about baby boomers who try to cram all their exercise into the weekend.

MSNBC's "Rock Center" interviewed Richard Reeves of the USC Annenberg School about John F. Kennedy's presidency, noting that Reeves has written a book on Kennedy.

Fortune quoted David Carter of the USC Marshall School about Nike's digital marketing strategy.

Reuters quoted S. Mark Young of the USC Marshall School about the after-effects of a celebrity death, and noted that he is author of "The Mirror Effect: How Celebrity Narcissism is Seducing America."

The San Diego Union-Tribune ran a Q&A with William Fulton of the USC Price School about the "smart growth" planning concept, and noted that he was mayor of the city of Ventura.

The San Diego Union-Tribune quoted James Moore of the USC Viterbi School about San Diego's port traffic.

KCRW-FM's "To the Point" interviewed J. Patrick Whelan of the Keck School of USC about the conflict between Catholic bishops and the White House over contraceptive insurance coverage.

La Opinion quoted Ginger Clark of the USC Rossier School about the guilt suffered by sexual abuse victims.

Crikey (Australia) highlighted The Village at USC development as an example that combines a good sense of urbanism with an efficient use of land.

The Desert Sun mentioned that USC President C. L. Max Nikias attended a dedication ceremony for the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands.

The New York Times noted that it produced a story as a project for the California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships, which are administered by the USC Annenberg School. The Washington Post ran two stories (second link here) supported by the fellowships.

KPCC-FM's "Off-Ramp" aired a speech and interview given at the Natural History Museum by Amy Parish of the USC Dornsife College, about bonobo apes and Darwinian feminism.

Reuters ran a speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke that cited research by Raphael Bostic and Gary Painter of the USC Lusk Center for Real Estate and Jenny Schuetz of the USC Price School.

ABC News Lawton, Okla., affiliate KSWO-TV mentioned that Pepe Romero of the USC Thornton School has performed for kings and heads of state and does concerts all over the world.

Business Insider mentioned that Jonathan Taplin of the USC Annenberg School participated in a panel about the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act at the Digital Broadband Migration Conference.

Daily Breeze mentioned that USC Thornton School's Concert Choir performed with the Golden State Pops Orchestra.
